AI Search

2 min read · Reviewed 17 Oct 2026

In short

Asking an AI tool a question and getting a direct answer, sometimes with the pages it used, instead of a list of links.

In plain English

You ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot or Perplexity a question and it answers in a few paragraphs, built from information it can find online. It may name the websites it drew on, or it may not. Either way, for many buyers that answer is the whole search: they never see a page of results to compare.

There is no ranking to check and no directory the AI looks your business up in. What it says about you depends on which pages it can find and what those pages say.

A real example

A small business owner asks, "Do I have to charge sales tax if I sell on Etsy?" The AI explains the rules in three paragraphs and cites a marketplace help page, an accounting guide and a small-business tax guide. A bookkeeper who has a perfectly good page on the same question gets no visit, because her page was not one of the three.

Why it matters

A buyer who used to scroll ten results now reads one answer. If your page is not among the sources, or AI describes your business wrongly, you lose that buyer without ever knowing they looked. The fix starts with finding out what AI says today, which you can do in a clean chat in a few minutes.
