Zero-Shot Prompting
1 min read · Reviewed 17 Oct 2026
In short
Asking a model to do something with no examples at all.
In plain English
Just asking, without demonstrating. Modern models handle this well for common tasks, which is why most everyday use is zero-shot without anyone naming it.
A real example
"Summarise this in five bullet points" needs no example — the model has seen countless summaries. "Write it in our house style" does need one, because it has never seen your house style.
Why it matters
Knowing which mode you are in tells you what to do when output disappoints. Common task, poor result: fix the brief. Unusual or house-specific: show an example instead.
