Doing Better with AI

Glossary AI Basics

Generative AI

1 min read · Reviewed 17 Oct 2026

In short

AI that creates new text, images or audio.

In plain English

Older AI mostly sorted things — spam or not spam, cat or dog. Generative AI makes something new instead: a paragraph, a picture, a voice track. It has learned the patterns in a very large amount of material, and it produces fresh work that follows those patterns.

A real example

You describe a product photo you want and get an image that never existed. You paste a rough set of notes and get back a tidy first draft. Nothing was retrieved from a library — it was generated on the spot.

Why it matters

Because the output is generated rather than looked up, it is confident but not automatically correct. Generative AI is excellent for drafts, options and starting points, and it always needs a human to check the facts before the work goes out.
